Asian Seabass Hatchery Project

The Asian Seabass Hatchery Project was initiated during 1999 at Thoduvai village of Sirkali-Taluk, Mayiladuthurai-District, Tamil Nadu.

Major Objectives

To develop technologies for large scale Seabass seed production.

To develop Larval & Nursery rearing technologies.

To disseminate technologies to Entrepreneurs/Govt. organizations.

Salient features of the Project

The seabass brooders are maintaining in Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) and selected male and females are maintaining in controlled environment tanks which is connected to the heater and chiller units.

Year-round production of Algae, Rotifer and larval rearing is standardized.

In larval rearing section improved survival from 30 % to 80% which was done by improving live feed operations and protocol for weaning diet.

The weaned fry/fingerlings are supplying to the farmers/entrepreneurs and conducting several hands-on training programmes for the importance of larval rearing.

Perfected in the RAS system in Broodstock Housing Facility.

Rotifer production technology improved and standardized to produce rotifer of about 150-200 nos/ml in all the seasons in out-door section.

RGCA offering national level consultancy services for Seabass Seed production technology to the private entrepreneurs and Govt. departments.

Various State Government Officials are being trained for full cycle of Seabass seed production and Hatchery Management.

Achievements

Nearly, 39.99 million seeds/fingerlings were supplied to more than 3,978 aquafarmers, Research Institutes & other beneficiaries since inception.

Till now 93 batches of hands-on training programmes completed benefitting 1798 entrepreneurs.

1 batch of hands on training on RAS of Asian seabass were completed benefitted 20 no of entrepreneurs and technicians

1 Till now 9 batches of hands on training programme on live feed completed benefited 132 no of entrepreneurs and technicians.
