Major Objectives

To provide disease diagnostic and pathogen surveillance services to RGCA Projects, Hatcheries, Aquaculture Farmers, Entrepreneurs & Seafood Exporters at par with International standards.

To expertise in detection of all major shell fish & finfish pathogens through Molecular Pathology (PCR) analysis and Histopathology.

To provide microbiological & water quality analysis for samples from aquaculture farms and hatcheries.

To conduct aquatic animal health surveillance for timely detection and prevention of Transboundary and emerging diseases.

To provide hands-on training in Aquaculture pathology and Disease diagnostics for the benefit of aqua-sector.

To provide facility and training for Dissertation work for research students in aquaculture pathology and related fields.

Salient features of Pathology Laboratory

RGCA CAPL is one of the very few laboratories in India, implementing international standard and accredited by NABL as per ISO/IEC 17025: 2005 since 2014, for all the OIE listed Shrimp pathogens.

Molecular pathology laboratory of CAPL is well equipped with advance machineries like real time PCR systems, robotic nucleic acid extractor etc. and provides testing services for 21 aquatic pathogens (17 Shrimp pathogens, 1 Freshwater prawn pathogen, 3 Marine finfish pathogens).

Histopathology section of CAPL is having automated instruments for embedding, microtomes, staining and mounting facilities and providing services for finfish & shellfish histopathology.

The Microbiology and Water quality laboratory of CAPL is providing routine bacteriological and major water parameter testing services to the aquaculture farms and hatcheries. Training on Molecular Pathology & Histopathology.

The lab has a dedicated section for working with SPF samples from various RGCA projects.

The lab is providing support to adjacent aquafarmers through shrimp seed health analysis being the lone facility in nearby areas. And The lab is conducting hands-on training regularly for aquaculture stake-holders on various aspects of aquaculture pathology.

Achievements

CAPL of RGCA was the first to report the presence of EHP infection in cultured L. vannamei and P. monodon in the country and reported it through its Newsletter in June 2015 and a scientific article was published subsequently in Diseases of Aquatic Organism, Vol. 120: 225–230, 2016.

The lab has been successfully participating in Ring Test conducted by Aquaculture Pathology Laboratory of University of Arizona, USA since 2011.

CAPL-RGCA is one of the collaborating centres in National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) coordinated by NBFGR and funded by NFDB since 2013.

Till date CAPL has published 25 partial gene sequences from disease related pathogens in NCBI-GenBank

13 postgraduate students have completed their project thesis work on aquaculture disease related field at CAPL till date.

The lab has conducted 15 awareness programmes on aquaculture diseases and its management at various parts in India and more than 339 participants are benefitted from 18 hands-on training provided by the lab.
