Major Objectives

To produce Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) broodstocks which are free from all known tiger shrimp diseases which are known / likely to cause mortality / crop loss to shrimp farmers.

To domesticate the SPF tiger shrimp and during the process of domestication efforts shall be made to improve desirable characteristics such as growth rate, fecundity, fertility etc.

To enable the shrimp export industry to comply with norms related to Traceability issues which is a necessity for getting access into many new and also to retain the existing shrimp markets.

Salient features of the Project

RGCA has created world class infrastructure facilities (SQU: Secondary Quarantine Unit & NBC: Nucleus Breeding Centre) that are technologically advanced and with best possible bio-security at Kodiyaghat, South Andaman.

This is the first project of its kind in India and probably the most sophisticated and technologically advanced projects among five Tiger Shrimp domestication programmes across the world.

DTSP has Pre-Primary and Primary Quarantine Unit at Amkunj, Middle Andaman to collect broodstock for initial quarantine for the production of founder families.

Achievements

The black tiger shrimp broodstock are developed in captivity with high Bio-secured conditions from early larval stage. RGCA-DTSP is the only institute in India has developed SPF broodstock in captivity.

At present, 11th Generation of Tiger Shrimp families are maintaining at NBC. All families are SPF certified by National and International accredited Laboratories.
