GIFT Tilapia Project

Tilapia (GIFT) Project of RGCA is located at Manikonda village in Krishna-District of Andhra Pradesh. The project initiated during 2008.

The project is successfully operating with technical collaboration from WorldFish, Malaysia and the only centre in India developed 8th Generation of GIFT in Indian condition through pedigreed selective breeding after procuring initial germplasm from WorldFish.

Major Objectives

To standardize Hatchery and Grow out farming technology of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT strain; Oreochromis niloticus).

To produce All Male seeds of GIFT strain and to supply to aquafarmers and entrepreneurs.

Conducting selective breeding programme of GIFT to produce quality seeds and broodstocks.

To support Satellite Breeding Centre for GIFT in India by providing improved GIFT stocks.

Providing consultancy services on GIFT propagation in India.

Importance of RGCA's GIFT Project

Tilapia commonly known as "Aquatic Chicken" is one of the most popular seafood commodities across the world with a growing global market of 11 to 12% per annum.

RGCA is successfully conducting pedigreed breeding programme of GIFT in Indian condition and produced G8 generation.

RGCA providing technical assistance for establishment of GIFT Satellite Breeding Centers and bio-secured tilapia farms.

RGCA is conducting regular hands-on training programmes in GIFT breeding, seed production & grow-out farming.

FAO described Tilapia as one of the most important food fish of the 21st century.

WorldFish Centre, Malaysia Joined hands with MPEDA-RGCA as sole authority in India, for Successful implementation of GIFT selective breeding programme.

Achievements

Since inception 46.90 million all-male seeds and 64,978 nos of Broodstock fry were supplied 582 beneficiaries belongs to research Institutes & other beneficiaries.

Till now 68 batches of hands-on training programmes completed benefitting 1088 entrepreneurs.

Fully pedigreed selectively bred stocks

Tested for TiLV regularly and assure TiLV free production

High growth and survival rate with better fillet yield

Average genetic gain is of > 8.5% in each Generation

Improved FCR as 1 : 0.85%

Suitable for both low density and High-density intensive culture systems
