Major Objectives

To produce SPF Pacific White Shrimp (Litopeneaus vannamei) Broodstock from the germplasm (PPLs - Parental Post Larvae) imported from authorized foreign supplier, for supplying to CAA approved shrimp hatcheries across India.

To maintain the utmost biosecurity to safeguard the SPF status of the broodstock being reared.

Salient features of the Project

In 2009 L. vannamei , commonly known as the Pacific White Shrimp, introduced in India for commercial farming. Within three years of its introduction L. vannamei has become the most preferred species of shrimp for aquaculture in the country.

The BMC facility of MPEDA-RGCA is supplying domestically raised SPF L. vannamei brooders in a cheaper rate than the imported brooders as FIRST BMC in India.

BMC equipped with Sea-water chillers / Online chillers for improved performance of male and better survival rate of Broodstock.

Diatoms (Chaetoceros & Thallassiosira) are being cultured to meet the demand of the facility.

Regular PCR analysis for the BMC shrimp samples is undertaken by RGCA's Central Pathology Lab (NABL accredited) at Sirkazhi, Tamil Nadu & cross verification takes place at University of Arizona, USA.

Regular water quality and microbiological samples are being analyzed in BMC's in-house lab to check the listed pathogen free status.

Services offered:

Training programmes: Hands-on training programmes on-
BMC operations of L. vannamei
Consultancy for L. vannamei Hatchery constructions and operations for BMC.

Achievements

Study on field performance of imported L. vannamei post larvae was conducted in private shrimp farms and 14 such trial runs were carried out to understand the performance of different families in Indian climatic conditions.

Rearing of 17 batches of L. vannamei post larvae were carried out to grow them up to broodstock

SPF status was maintained during grow-out of L. vannamei post larvae in every batch of Broodstock at BMC facility.

Since inception BMC has supplied nearly 2.1 Lakh nos of broodstock to 326 beneficiaries
